When breastfeeding needs support
Breastfeeding is the first choice for many families, but the journey does not always go as planned. Pain, low milk supply, premature birth, illness, separation or the wish to share feeding with a partner can all make bottle-feeding part of everyday life.
The Danish brand Caramma was created around the belief that families in these situations need support, not guilt. Its aim is not to replace breastfeeding, but to offer a thoughtful solution whenever bottle-feeding is necessary or a family chooses to combine breast and bottle.
A brand born from personal experience
Caramma was founded by design experts Rie Maktabi and Monika Havnø. The idea grew from their own breastfeeding experiences and the challenges that came with them, including low milk supply, illness, returning to work and shared parental leave.
These experiences led them to look more closely at the design of conventional baby bottles. In most bottles, gravity allows milk to flow towards the nipple with relatively little effort. At the breast, however, a baby must create and maintain a vacuum to continue the milk flow, allowing them toregulate their own feeding rhythm.
Co-created with families and healthcare professionals
Over five years, Caramma worked with families, midwives, lactation professionals and other healthcare specialists to develop a bottle based more closely on the natural principles of breastfeeding. Their insights shaped every detail of it, from the way it feels in the hand to the way it responds to a baby’s natural rhythm.
The result is the Caramma Support Bottle, featuring double-patented technology and created with one clear ambition: to be the second best to the breast.
The idea behind the brand is straightforward: better product design begins with understanding how the body works and must also reflect real family life. Some families breastfeed exclusively, others combine different feeding methods, and for some, a bottle is necessary from the beginning. Caramma aims to support these different situations without judgement.
How does the Caramma Support Bottle work?
At the heart of the bottle is double-patented technology, including a two-part vent system inspired by the natural vacuum suction of the breast. The first sip comes easily, but to continue the milk flow, the baby must create a vacuum—much like they do at the breast.
With conventional baby bottles, milk often flows with minimal effort. Caramma allows the baby to control the pace of feeding. This helps maintain the sucking technique used at the breast, supports combination feeding and gives the baby more time to recognise when they are full. By keeping the feeding pace in the baby’s control, the system is also designed to encourage responsive feeding habits from the beginning.
Midwife Josefine describes the difference: “The baby needs to work for the milk in a similar way they do at the breast. They maintain their vacuum, engage their jaw muscles and experience a feeding rhythm that feels familiar.”
Air is removed before feeding
The Caramma bottle is made from soft, flexible silicone. Before feeding, constant pressure is applied to the bottom of the bottle until all the air has been pushed out of both the bottle and the nipple.
Happy stomach, happy baby. This means the baby drinks milk rather than air throughout the feed. The system is designed to reduce the amount of air swallowed and the discomfort associated with it. As no additional air needs to enter the bottle during feeding, it works in different positions and does not rely on gravity in the same way as a conventional bottle.
Feeding in all positions
A conventional baby bottle relies on gravity to move milk towards the nipple, which usually means feeding a baby in a semi-reclined or lying position. The Caramma Support Bottle works differently: the bottle is air-free, and the baby creates the vacuum needed to continue the milk flow.
This allows the bottle to be used in the natural positions familiar from breastfeeding. A baby can be fed lying on their side, in bed, on their tummy or in another position that suits the family.
It also makes it easier to maintain eye contact, support skin-to-skin contact and preserve closeness throughout the feed. This kind of close contact can support the release of oxytocin, helping to create a calm and connected feeding moment for both the baby and caregiver.
Caramma sees feeding as more than the transfer of milk. It is also a moment of connection between a baby and their caregiver. The bottle allows all caregivers to take part in these moments, regardless of gender or whether they are able to breastfeed.
Designed to support combination feeding
One common concern when combining breastfeeding and bottle-feeding is that milk can flow faster and require less effort from a bottle. Caramma’s slow flow and vacuum-based system are designed to reduce this difference.
The baby actively uses their mouth and jaw muscles and controls the milk flow through sucking. This makes Caramma relevant for families who want to offer expressed breast milk, supplement breastfeeding with formula or share feeding between caregivers.
Every baby has different needs and feeding patterns. If a baby experiences difficulties with sucking, swallowing or feeding, the choice of bottle should be discussed with a midwife, lactation consultant or another healthcare professional.

The Caramma Support Bottle received the Danish Design Award in 2024 and the Red Dot: Best of the Best award in 2026. These recognitions highlight both its technical solution and its fresh approach to a product category that has changed very little over generations.
